Today we uploaded our Preliminary task to YouTube. As a group we sat down and discussed the good and bad point of the video as a whole as well as how we could improve it, what shots were impressive and moments in the video where the soundtrack and sound effects acted as triggers for the audience and made them feel the key emotions of a thriller such as excitement, suspense and a sense of danger and foreboding. My role in the preliminary task was to act within the video and to edit the video together. After the completion of this preliminary task I have learnt many knew skills on iMovie such as how to make a shot appear in slow motion or sped up and how to add different transitions to shots. The most important thing that I will take from this task is the knowledge that to create a video such as a thriller opening which is our next task it takes allot of time and effort, many shots and for the video to look effective when complete varied camera shots and movements must be used as well as the addition of a relevant soundtrack and sound effects.
Preproduction as shown and discussed in previous blog posts included the creation of a story board which was important as it helped the group to map out our ideas clearly it also allowed us to have a smooth transition from our script to filming. We also created a rough script on paper to show some of the dialogue we wanted to include in the video and small action parts. Preproduction had a massively positive effect on our video as it allowed everyone in the group to be clear on what was happening and when it also allowed us to have a clear plan to take when beginning to film. The video could have been improved massively by the addition of some key shots we missed out on such as a shot of a actor in a chair, a hand on a door handle being pulled open as well as a shot reverse shot of two sides of the door. We were unable to add this into the video because the camera we were using was wiped accidentally after the filming session. When editing the video we used many different techniques to allow the shots to slow and the match on action to also flow and become unnoticeable.
Some of the shots fade to the next and others cut. The cut transition was used mainly after the reveal of the possessed child to add to the fear factor. The fade transitions were used in the beginning ion the video to build tension and suspense, as if to give the effect of everything being calm and slow and then as the tension builds the soundtrack gets faster, the sound effects are added the tension builds until the reveal of the child and the quick decent into fear and panic by the conclusion of the video. To improve the video the goal would be to add the missing shots into the video as well as the addition of more fitting sound effects as the loud bang sound repeatedly put in the video to add suspense has to be modified when taken into iMovie to adjust its pitch to fit in with the level of fear portrait in the shot. For example at the videos peak showing the child the sound effect was adjusted to be as loud as possible and as the video came to a close the pitch of the sound effect became lower and lower to suggest the safety the actor (me) had entered by running out of the building.
Skills my group and myself will need to acquire before the creating the next task of a Thriller opening would be for everyone in the group to be comfortable editing on iMovie as this will allow the production of the opening to constantly be worked on and not left if some members of the group are not present. To add to this i would like to become more confident using a camera and filming as well as the addition of filming outside of a certain area will hopefully broaden the range of shots used in our next task. Our complete preliminary task is shown below:
